Alicante features a wonderful harbour area, where you will find beautiful long alleys for nice relaxing strolls. Alicante’s rich history can be experienced through the many historical buildings such as cathedrals and churches that still stand. Adjacent to the harbour is a long wide sandy beach. There is also a nude beach nearby. Scuba diving is a popular activity in the region.
With an average year round temperature of 18° C, Alicante’s famous beaches can be enjoyed throughout the year. If you get tired of the beach, Alicante is also an exciting cultural destination with several important museums. Alicante also offers incredible fresh seafood straight from the Mediterranean. The nearby island of Tabarca offers a nice weekend refuge and getaway.
Despite the tourists, Alicante remains everything you would expect from a vibrant Spanish city on the Mediterranean coast. History, Architecture and the buzz of of a flourishing economy. It is the second largest city in the Valencian region and capital to the fourth wealthiest Province in Spain.
Alicante is dominated by the fortifications of the Castillo de Santa Barbara which sit on the top of Mount Benecantil. The site has been used as a fortification since the area was settled. The Carthaginians, the Romans and the Moors all added to the structure, but nothing of their work remains. The building as seen today dates from the 16th Century and remained impregnable until the War of the Spanish Succession when it was destroyed in 1709 by the troops of Philip V.
Today, its view over Alicante town and the coastline both north and south is the main attraction for visitors. At the base of the castle, the oldest parts of Alicante can be found in the Barrio Santa Cruz district. Some of the cities finest buildings such as Museo de la Asegurada,( A museum of 20th Century Art), sit among the bars and cafes of the palm lined streets. In the middle of the oldest part of the city stands the Concatedral de San Nicolas de Bari, the city’s cathedral. Built in the 17th Century, it was built on the site of the 13th Century church that in turn was built to replace the cities mosque when the Moors were expelled.
